Green Activities Coordinator
Location: Hargrave Hall & Harry Rice Hall
Hours: 8 hours per week
Salary: £6,136 per annum (£14.75 per hour)
Role Overview
We are looking for an energetic and self-driven person to lead green activities at two of our community centres in Archway, London (N19). The role includes:
- Running the Children’s Green Group at Hargrave Hall (set hours x3 per week – Fridays, 3:00pm – 6:00pm – class runs 4pm to 5pm)
- Facilitating a Drop-in Adults Group (x3 hours – flexible weekday hours)
- Maintaining and developing the gardens at Harry Rice Hall and Hargrave Hall Community Centre (x2 hours – flexible weekday hours)
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, Implement, and Oversee Activities: Create, plan, and lead a diverse range of gardening activities for both children and adults, ensuring these activities are engaging and meet the varied needs and interests of our community members.
• Effective Communication: Communicate with service users and staff to ensure the smooth coordination of all gardening activities and that participants feel supported and informed.
• Foster Participation: Cultivate an inclusive, welcoming environment that encourages participation from all community members, promoting social interaction, learning, and a sense of belonging.
• Personalised Activity Plans: Tailor gardening and environmental activities to the individual needs and interests of participants, promoting their physical, emotional, and cognitive well-being.
• Health & Safety Compliance: Collaborate with management and volunteers to ensure all activities meet health and safety standards, particularly when working with children or vulnerable adults.
• Garden Maintenance: Regularly maintain and care for the garden spaces at both Hargrave Hall and Harry Rice Hall, ensuring they remain welcoming, educational, and safe for all users.
• Record Keeping and Feedback: Keep accurate attendance records and gather feedback from participants to continually improve activities, ensuring they remain relevant and effective.
• Social Media & Promotion: Use social media platforms to promote the children’s and adults’ gardening groups, share updates, success stories, and photos to engage the wider community and encourage new participation.
Children’s Green Group (Fridays, 3:00pm – 6:00pm)
- Run the Children’s Green Group from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, providing fun and educational gardening activities.
- Facilitate outdoor sessions in warmer months, helping children explore nature and the garden.
- In winter, transition to indoor activities focused on sustainability.
- Set up (3:00pm – 4:00pm) and clean up (5:00pm – 6:00pm) to ensure the space is ready for the next session.
- Ensure all activities are safe, inclusive, and age-appropriate.
Drop-in Adults Group (Flexible Hours, 3 hours)
- Facilitate a drop-in adult’s group, providing a space for the local community to engage in informal gardening activities, share knowledge, or seek advice.
- Support adults in growing their own plants, offering practical advice and hands-on demonstrations.
Garden Maintenance & Development
- Maintain and develop the gardens at both Hargrave Hall and Harry Rice Hall, ensuring they are well-kept, accessible, and used by the community.
- Encourage hands-on gardening activities during the children’s group and offer advice during the adult group.
- Work with volunteers and other community members to improve the garden spaces and create new projects.
Social Media & Promotion
- Promote the children’s and adults’ gardening groups on social media platforms.
- Share updates, photos, and success stories to increase community engagement and participation.
Administration & Coordination
- Maintain attendance records for both groups and gather participant feedback.
- Coordinate with management on any additional resources or supplies needed for activities.
Person Specification
This role is designed to be led by the individual running it, meaning we are looking for someone who can take ownership and drive the success of the programme. You will have a limited budget to work with, so being resourceful, proactive, and able to think creatively is essential. We need someone who can bring energy, enthusiasm, and a go-getter attitude to the role.
Essential:
✅ Experience in gardening, horticulture, or a related field.
✅ Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage both children and adults in gardening.
✅ Friendly, approachable, and passionate about community work.
✅ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
✅ Experience in running or facilitating group activities.
Desirable:
➕ Experience working with children or youth groups.
➕ Knowledge of sustainable or organic gardening practices.
➕ Ability to use social media for promoting community activities.
Additional Information
- Flexible working hours for the adult drop-in group.
- DBS check required for working with children.
- Training in health & safety, safeguarding, and other relevant areas will be provided.

Creative Session Leaders – Summer Playscheme 2024

Are you passionate about creativity and working with children? We’re expanding our summer playscheme program and are looking for dynamic individuals to join our team as session leaders!
Our summer playscheme offers a fun and engaging environment for children aged 7 to 12 to explore, learn, and make memories during the summer break. From arts and crafts to outdoor adventures, our program is designed to inspire creativity and foster friendships.
Responsibilities:
– Design and lead creative sessions* and activities for children aged 7 to 12.
– Plan engaging and age-appropriate workshops, games, and projects.
– Foster a positive and inclusive environment where children can express themselves and unleash their creativity.
– Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during sessions.
*creative sessions could include: cooking/baking, dance, drama, music to nature and the sciences
Requirements:
– Passion for creativity and working with children.
– Previous experience working with children in a educational, or recreational setting preferred.
– Ability to design and implement engaging and interactive activities.
– Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Playscheme Healthy Eating Cook
Location: Hargrave Hall Community Centre, Hargrave Road, N19 5SP
Working over Easter, Summer and Christmas School Holidays the successful candidate will be an integral part of the playscheme team providing fresh, nutritious, and well-presented two course lunch, suitable for children aged between 5 to 11 years and be responsible for running small group food related activities.
Day shift – Monday to Friday
Hours: 10:00 to 15:00
Dates based on Islington Christmas, Easter and Summer Holidays*
*maximum of 5 weeks over the duration of the holidays.
Key Responsibilities
- To ensure that meals that are prepared reflect any special dietary requirements of the individual children; ‑ referring to food allergies, food intolerances, cultural needs, vegetarian requirements and any other, according to the information supplied by the Team Leader.
- To contribute ideas to menu planning with the Team Leader, ensuring that the children receive a healthy nutritionally balanced and culturally diverse diet.
- To maintain a safe, clean and healthy kitchen environment at all times.
- To adhere to the ‘Safer Food better Business standards and record keeping. To strictly adhere to Food Hygiene Regulations and other safety precautions at all times. Be aware of and implement Health and Safety procedures including Risk Assessments and COSHH.
- To ensure stock rotated daily and stock is monitored and maintained through the weekly shopping order.
- To ensure that equipment is maintained in good order and that any faulty or potentially dangerous equipment is immediately removed and reported to the Hargrave Halls Management.
- To ensure that equipment and materials (including the dishwasher, microwave, oven, fridges and freezers are cleaned and everything is cleared away leaving the kitchen neat and tidy at the end of the day in line with the daily and weekly cleaning checklist
- To maintain a neat and tidy appearance at all times, displaying a courteous and pleasant manner towards all. To be motivated, enthusiastic and innovative about the role.
Required Education, Skills and Qualifications
Essential Criteria
- A Current Food Hygiene Certificate
- An ability to cook.
- An ability to use food preparation equipment and ensure the economic use of materials, equipment and energy.
- An understanding of nutritionally balanced foods
- An awareness of dietary needs, food allergies, culturally diverse menus,
- Knowledge and awareness of Health and Safety, Environmental health and Food Safety and COSHH
- Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative.
- Ability to manage own time and prioritise tasks
- Excellent communication skills
